The Journey So Far: A Life Update
It has been about one month since I’ve set forth with my writing journey. My first post was at the beginning of October, where I defined my goals and described how I intend to reach them. Within these few weeks, I have been learning so much. I’ve been learning more about writing, marketing, and myself. It has already been quite a journey, and I am just beginning my climb. When I first started out, I knew that it was going to be a learning experience but little did I know how much l still have left to learn. This introduction into my writing career is a mere stepping stone for what is to come.
During these first few weeks, I have set up a professional profile on most social media platforms. This is a step towards being able to network with other freelance writers and creators of all sorts. I have proclaimed myself as a freelance writer and editor who offers services proofreading. To gain more experience with editing I have been doing some volunteer work through Distributed Proofreaders, a web-based project that supports the development of e-books. For Distributed Proofreaders (DP), I carefully analyze photocopies of old texts for errors and submit them into the DP database. I also have done some volunteer proofreading for users of Reddit, and intend to search for some pro bono work elsewhere. I am currently building my portfolio to showcase my work and find potential clients. My goals for this week are to write a letter of intent that clearly expresses my current intention as a freelance writer and to practice writing a letter of proposal that I will send to potential clients. I am continuing to study Marketing with the goal of being a content writer for a company someday. Types of work I have in mind are social media manager, blog content writer, or writing in advertising.
The Marketing course in which I am enrolled has changed my perspective on advertising. I had originally chosen the niche because of my skills in customer service. I had thought that with my knowledge and experience of dealing with customers, I would be able to identify and address consumer needs efficiently. After starting Intro to Marketing, I have obtained a lot more knowledge. I am now viewing advertising and brand position statements in a whole new light. I enjoy looking over a company's website and identifying its marketing techniques. This helps me learn more about what techniques work, and how the consumers respond.
I look forward to this journey into a world of writing and advertising. I am excited to be blogging my experience so that I can reference back and see how I progress. This is a new beginning for me, and it was one I was nervous to start for so long. I have always loved to write, but I never thought I would be able to turn it into a career, or that I could reach out to so many people who are interested in what I have to say. This story is one that I am happy to share.
